WHAT TO EXPECT

I have been living in Cornwall for the past 20 years and it has been my inspiration for much of my work. With my extensive knowledge of the coastline, this workshop is designed to capture some of the most spectacular and dramatic scenery that the UK has to offer. As we will be chasing the light during these dramatic months, this workshop will focus on leveraging the weather forecast to ensure optimal photography conditions.

Seascape photography is a genre of photography that focuses on capturing the beauty of the sea, including the sky, water, and surrounding environment. The key element in seascape photography is light, which can make all the difference in a photograph. This workshop will cover the intricacies of capturing light in its finest form, including techniques such as exposure, white balance, and filters. In addition to light, composition is also a crucial aspect of seascape photography. The workshop will provide you with insights into the different elements of composition, such as foreground, middle ground, and background, and how to use them to create a visually appealing photograph. Moreover, the workshop will also focus on the use of filters in seascape photography. Filters can help you control the light and colours in your photographs, such as polarizing filters to reduce glare or neutral density filters to create a long exposure effect. As always, there will be a storytelling narrative that will help you develop a narrative to your photography. This will include understanding how to tell a story through your images, using composition and light to convey emotions, and creating a sense of place in your photographs.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?

Here's a breakdown of a typical day at your Seascape Winter Photography Workshop in Cornwall during October, when the North Atlantic is at its most active:

Morning:
The day begins early, before dawn, as participants gather at a designated meeting point near the rugged coastline of Cornwall. With cameras at the ready and tripods in hand, we’ll set out along the winding coastal paths, guided by the faint glow of the impending sunrise.

As the sky begins to brighten with hues of pink and orange, we’ll find our perfect vantage points, positioning ourselves to capture the breathtaking beauty of the awakening seascape. The crashing waves against towering cliffs provide a dramatic backdrop, while seagulls soar overhead, adding a sense of motion to the scene. With each passing moment, the light evolves, casting ever-changing shadows and reflections on the water below.

Mid-Morning:
Instead of a traditional mid-morning review, we’ll continue exploring, venturing further along the coastline in search of new perspectives and compositions. Armed with insights from the morning shoot, we’ll experiment with different techniques and settings, honing our skills under my guidance. From long exposure shots to minimalist compositions, each photographer will put their creative spin on the dynamic landscape before them.

Lunch Break:
By late morning, we’ll take a well-deserved break for lunch. Gathering at a quaint seaside cafe to trade stories and share our favourite shots from the morning session.

Afternoon:
Rejuvenated and refuelled, we’ll set out once again, eager to capture the magic of the Cornish coastline in the soft afternoon light. From secluded coves to windswept cliffs, each location offers its unique challenges and opportunities for creativity. We’ll embrace the minimalist approach, seeking out simple yet powerful compositions that convey the raw beauty and untamed energy of the sea.

As the afternoon progresses, the skies darken, signalling the approach of evening. With the light fading fast, we’ll capture the last golden rays of sunlight dancing across the water, seizing the moment before it slips away.

Evening:
As darkness descends upon the rugged coastline, the workshop day draws to a close with a gathering at a cosy seaside inn where we can reflect on the day's adventures.
