WHAT TO EXPECT
Are you passionate about surfing and spending time in the great outdoors? Do you have a keen interest in the art of surf photography and want to learn more about capturing those perfect moments on camera? This workshop is designed for anyone who loves to surf or spend time near the ocean, as well as those who are interested in the creative process of surf photography. Through a combination of hands-on instruction, guided practice sessions, and expert feedback, you'll learn the skills and techniques needed to take stunning photos of surfers in action. Whether you're a beginner with little experience or an experienced photographer looking to enhance your skills, this workshop is the perfect opportunity to take your passion for surfing and photography to the next level.
I have captured photographs of surfing all over the world, from France to Hawaii, and from Indonesia to Australia. However, I have taken more pictures of surfing in my home county than anywhere else. Cornwall is blessed with stunning scenery, which forms the perfect backdrop for surfers. For three days, we will travel around Cornwall, visiting multiple locations with different scenery, and most importantly, different waves. Our goal is to take pictures that tell a story and create a narrative.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?
As dawn breaks over the rugged coastline of Cornwall, the air is filled with the salty scent of the ocean. To take advantage of the amazing light we have in Cornwall during these workshop months, we’ll photograph from sunrise until sunset every day.
Early Morning: Sunrise Shoot
The day begins in the soft hues of dawn, we’ll set up on the sandy shores of one of Cornwall's renowned surf beaches. With the first light painting the sky in hues of pink and orange, I’ll provide tips and techniques for capturing the perfect sunrise shot. As the sun peeks over the horizon, illuminating the waves with golden light, shutters click in harmony, freezing moments of beauty in pixels.
Morning Session: Techniques and Tips
After the sunrise shoot, we’ll gather for a session on surf photography techniques. I’ll share insights on composition, exposure, and timing, drawing from my years of experience capturing the dynamic energy of the waves.
Midday: Exploration and Lunch
As midday approaches, we’ll embark on a journey along the rugged coastline, scouting out new vantage points and hidden coves. Lunch is enjoyed on the cliffs overlooking the sea, a moment of relaxation amidst the excitement of the day.
Afternoon Session: Action Shots
With the afternoon sun casting long shadows across the sand, the focus shifts to capturing the action of the surfers riding the waves. From powerful swells to graceful manoeuvres, every moment is a chance to freeze the adrenaline-fueled energy of the ocean in a single frame. We’ll experiment with different angles and settings, striving to convey the thrill of the surf through the lens.
Evening: Sunset Shoot
As the day draws to a close, we’ll gather once more for a sunset shoot. With the sky ablaze in hues of orange and purple, the waves take on a magical quality, reflecting the last light of the day.
Reflection and Review
As the last light fades from the sky, we’ll gather to review the day's photos and share our favourite shots and memories from the day in one of the many cornish pubs and eateries.
